This really resonates with me. I think I have 2 kinds of meditations like this. 1 is more “centering” - fly fishing; and the other is more “processing” - gravel biking.

When I’m on a long, multi hour gravel bike ride - I usually don’t listen to music - just the sounds of world around me and let my mind freely wander. As my mind wanders it finds the tough emotional pieces I haven’t yet processed and starts chipping away at them. Sometimes I end up crying quite hard depending on what my mind has decided to work through. I’m sure I look like a maniac to whatever farmers I’m passing by.

Fly fishing on the other hand is less emotionally intense and much more calming. The dull roar of the river, the intense focus on the water - trying to spot the fish movements within it, trying to identify the tiny bug life around me so I can better select a fly, the focus on placing my fly and my line precisely where I want it. The rhythmic casting, mending, and recasting. Finding constant balance as you wade across uneven river beds. It’s a rare thing where I can fully silence my mind but it’s easy to do when fly fishing. It’s like a deep reprieve from the otherwise constant chatter of thinking - just calm and serene.


This is probably a stupid question - as I’m totally unfamiliar with how interpreters call into system APIs - but would those calls use the bun runtime or the JavaScript Core engine the bun runtime wraps?


That really isn’t true anymore. I’ve been using Bazzite for 9 months now and haven’t needed to boot windows once for a game. I don’t even bother checking protondb anymore. Games just work and peripherals just work has been my lived experience. I think it’s probably a lot of work to get a random old distro to support gaming - but there are several distros which make it flat out easy with modern hardware (Bazzite, Cachy, SteamOS, and likely others too).


Curious to learn more here - why would altitude play a role here? And when you say high altitude - are we talking La Paz, Bolivia (~12k feet) or Denver, CO (~5k feet)?


The primary source of uncorrelated bit-flips is, effectively, cosmic radiation.

(Correlated bit-flips are likely from a manufacturing error... or, at least in one case, from excessively radioactive ceramic packaging.)

The more atmosphere you have to randomly absorb high-energy photons, the better.

Engineering computer memory to work in space is a whole field of study, see Radiation Hardened memory. The main physical difference about space is the radiation profile and radiation induced memory upset.

Are you disputing that the Earth's atmosphere absorbs and reduces the amount of ambient cosmic radiation? Or where is the skepticism coming from?


I am disputing that cosmic ray showers are the obvious dominant source of terrestrial DRAM bit flips.


There is a lot of direct evidence from increased error rates in computers on airplanes.


That's a much weaker statement than "the primary source of uncorrelated bit flips is cosmic radiation".


Cosmic radiation is always a source of errors for any kind of DRAM.

Whether it is the primary source of errors, depends on the design of the DRAM die.

In a badly designed DRAM there could be many other error causes.

The designers of a DRAM certainly attempt to minimize all the error causes that they can control. If they succeed, the cosmic radiation would remain the primary error source.

Without access to internal documents of the DRAM vendors, we cannot know if they have indeed minimized all other error causes.

In modern DRAM chips, a major error cause can also be the disturbance of some memory cells when some other cells are accessed in their neighborhood, which is the basis of the Rowhammer attacks, but which can also happen during the normal use of the memory, when certain access patterns happen by chance.

The DRAM vendors do not provide details about the behavior of their devices, with the hope that this makes harder the task for someone who wants to design a variant of the Rowhammer attacks, but this also makes impossible for the owner of the memory to predict whether an application program will not perform by chance an access pattern that will unintentionally flip some memory bits, which without ECC will not be detected and corrected.


Companies making DRAM have no incentive to make the best products theoretically possible, they just want them good enough to not get many returns and avoid the risk of a class action lawsuit if a significant pattern of problems appears.

Avoiding returns for ECC DIMMs is a harder challenge when they are used in an environment where the server will have a management system that tracks errors over all time and when there might be a network management system tracking all errors over all systems.

Avoiding returns for non-ECC DIMMs is easy when a few errors per month won't be noticed by most users who assume that Windows always crashes anyway.

Has any DRAM company tested chips and made non-ECC DIMMs from the ones that have lower quality?

As an aside are the 2^N*3 sizes of DDR5 DIMMs (like 24G and 48G) made from chips that had errors in one section and got reconfigured to have 3/4 the capacity to not use the bad parts?


The word "uncorrelated" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that claim. Most DRAM error sources are pretty clearly correlated, if you're paying any attention.


AFAIK it's been documented by Los Alamos since they're at high altitude.

Yea, except datacenters also need connectivity. And submarine connectivity, while not particularly expensive, is quite vulnerable - even more so than on land.


People outside the US have a significant lack of Internet functionality when there are problems with submarine cables, but it hardly ever fails. Apart from when certain countries sabotage things.

If you only need 100M deep water then you don't need to go far offshore, there are places where it's only about 1KM out. 12M of water is used for storing spent nuclear fuel assemblies and less than half of that is needed for protection so 5M should be adequate for stopping cosmic rays and that depth is common in harbours for recreational boating, such harbours shouldn't have issues of cable breakage.

But the real issue for comparing submarine and orbital computers is cooling. Space is cold but doesn't allow easy transmission of heat.

It does feel like it’d be “better” if good behavior came from the company’s intrinsic behavior but laws like this help (re)establish norms that encourage those sorts of actions.

Amodei is convinced he's abraham prefiguring AI's christ. Very different than Altman's cold power-seeking. You can always trust someone who's selfish, since they'll always do whatever's in their benefit at all times.


Is that better? I'd much rather have someone trying to build a good product to sell to willing buyers at a fair price than some zealot who thinks he's going to usher in the second coming and end the world or something.


The choice is not binary. I use DeepSeek (paid) for coding, and Qwen (free) for casual stuff from the browser chat UI.


I mean paying for deepseek is sending money to China, and any company in China is pretty much an extension of the CCP (or can become one at the snap of their fingers). I don't think this is much better or worse than the American AI companies.


Deepseek is much cheaper so that means you spend less on CCP than on Anthropic/OpenAI. Then there are third party providers as well.


If that's a concern, an easy alternative is using companies like novita or fireworks.ai to run open source chinese models. They are incredibly price competitive, have strict data retention policies, and in general are quite fast. Also, you don't get used to a model and suddenly get rug pulled when the provider decide to upgrade.

It's a testament to how much American companies have been fucking over their own reputations that people would view them as not "better or worse" than an extension of the CCP.

Deepseek proper is the only provider offering Deepseek V4 Pro at such an insanely low price. All the other providers are like 5x.

If someone says they're using Deepseek, it's probably a safe bet that they're sending money to China. People choose an inferior model (Deepseek) because it's cheaper. Not many people are willing to use Deepseek but also pay the 5x price to have an American company run it for them.

The $20/month Claude Code plan has incredibly low rate limits. $20/month of DeepSeek usage buys you a lot. Even more so in hobby projects where usage is bursty, not nicely distributed over a work week

Dario is constantly fearmongering to generate press, gaslighting, and contradicting himself. Mythos is the most recent example of that. It was never too powerful to release, that was a lie to generate publicity and fear, and an excuse because they didn't have the compute to serve it. People were finding the same bugs and exploits using GPT5.4, GPT5.5, and lesser models. Now all of a sudden, they do have the compute, and now they're saying that Mythos is releasing in the coming weeks.

Anthropic is constantly caught up in ethical scandals too. They pump the web full of advertising bots. They steal peoples tokens, punish you for disabling telemetry, blacklist people they don't like. They had remote code execution vulns in their product for nearly a year and secretly buried that fact, no disclosures at all. Here are some of them https://clawd.rip

They're the least generous with open-source. The most closed off. The most likely to punish you for doing something they disagree with. Whenever OpenAI has issues they reset Codex's rate limits, they've done this every month that I can remember, and sometimes several weeks in a month. When's the last time Anthropic has done that for the many service issues they have had? Never. Not once.

Anthropic also never reply to peoples complaints or issues on GH issues, meanwhile the Codex team is very responsive and they actually care about customers user experience.

There's more, but you get the point. And yes, obviously not all of this is about Dario himself, but he drives the culture at the company.

Yes I'm surprised most of the "anthropic stans" don't realize this.

It's not like OpenAI is a particular fan of open-source models either, but the way I see it to OpenAI it's a purely calculated pragmatic business decision. They won't release weights for any good models since it'd impact revenue, and they view other open models as competition. But otherwise they're not ideological about it. If there was some really good reason to, they would (and they have, gpt-oss probably as a fig leaf). Sure some of the characterizations of "sama" aren't particularly flattering, but at the same time I think the common thread that he views everything as "just ruthless business" is ultimately beneficial, since rational and pragmatic can be modeled and understood.

Anthropic's founding philosophy is built on the premise that only they should control AI because of its danger, only they can be the right stewards, and that open-source models are an existential risk. Oh and the fact that it's Chinese open-source models rather than western models that are "winning" must be keeping them up at night.


Do you hold any amount of power in the world? A project that people care about, or a deliverable that someone depends on?

Just curious how you can afford to care about the guy 7 levels above the men that built and support the API that you buy.


Some people care about things beyond their own immediate self interest.

Some don't, and find it hard to believe others really do.

Being a “prick” is completely inconsequential compared to the massive harm that anthropics views could create.

Such as them genuinely believing they are the only ones who should control AI. What could possibly go wrong?


I think it's about whether you trust someone or not. I don't really find Altman trustable. No one should have sole control over AI, but we need to have some trust in the people that are operating it.


I enough 'small' senior developers, project managers, product owners, internal IT people take a small stand against OpenAI products, that can still sum up to a notable impact
