I think this is the 'logic' that has underpinned the previous dominant views of animals as mindless automatons.

I like eating animals -> eating animals is morally OK -> animals don't have consciousness

Merely trying to point out that animals do have concsiousness often causes cognitive dissonance and is quickly dismissed.
