What if two-factor fobs were actually secure, really cheap, and required nearly zero user intervention?

How about a device that would just live on your real-world keychain, which would communicate with the website through a central registry? If you have it, it does a two-factor authentication behind the scenes with any website that has the feature that you've enabled it for.

It would have to be someone like Amazon, Apple, or Google to implement this.

Not really. Why do I have to take it out of my pocket and plug it into the machine? Why can't it just get on my home WiFi network?

Because it's not self-powered? They do an NFC model too.
