You don't have to parse this in terms of cartoonish stereotypes or opposing extremes. But if you look at his background, his statements (in the large) and the evolution of his career -- it's pretty obvious what the guy is, and what he stands for. As regards Ukraine, a review of Russia's relations with neighboring countries over the past 400 years will provide further context.
