I think the mildly-open nature of Android will be better marketing than Windows Phone - not overboard on openness, but not completely closed.

Hardware manufacturers and Cell providers won't support the extra cost of paying for the OS (in the long run).

This outcome isn't what I would like most, but it seems realistic.
