Not sure about US media, but this is shifting overton window of discussion a lot, compared to what I hear/read in Europe.
I think people believe Ukraine can actually win. Is it a real possibility? Probably not. Is west willing to risk tension and fight Russia? Probably not.
This is a blog of news, views, and commentary, from a humorous free-market point of view… In real life I'm a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford. I was formerly a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. I'm also an adjunct scholar of the Cato Institute.”
We don't though. Ukraine never joined any military alliances. They didn't take the risk of needing to protect us and thusly we never took the risk of protecting them. Adding to a war does not end it.
However, we can absolutely drop all relationships with Russia. Isolate them to their own borders. Their Sochi race track will be quiet. Russian chess doesnt exist today. Various other sports dont exist for russia anymore.
NATO is not obligated to fight for Ukraine. That is true.
The question is, does NATO need to fight on its own behalf? I would say no, for two reasons.
First, even if Russia rolls over Ukraine, will that leave NATO enough worse off that it justifies going to war? No, I don't think it will.
Second, "you pushed me into it" is Putin's logic (or at least his very flimsy excuse) for invading Ukraine. I really don't want to use the same reasoning.
The only reason that I might buy is that it is morally necessary - necessary because we believe in freedom, and Russia is trying to take away Ukraine's freedom to choose their own future. I'm most sympathetic to that argument, but we've usually only used that in cases of genocide, and sometimes not even then. Ukraine clearly is not at that point... yet.

I read that archived page published by russia as if they won the war. This is all about subjugating Ukraine.
I think the best thing we can do is sit back. Remove Russia from the world theatre by literally closing our borders to them in all ways, but not invade them. This will tell entities like Pakistan, India, and China that we are post-war. Everyone can stop this war shit.
When we do that, we move from a zero-sum game to much more.

I feel terribly bad for Ukrainians
