Twitter's goal is explicitly to have a single codebase that works everywhere: desktop website, mobile website, and mobile apps. (Sorry I can't find a source for this, any search with the "twitter" keyword is flooded with irrelevant results...)

It makes sense in that context; but I agree it's a shame they won't keep a small alternative frontend just to view tweets.



I think the point is: you don’t need a “codebase” to display text and images. Which is what the vast majority of web content is: text and images.
