Apple's Motion can do most stuff After Effects can do and many tricks it can't. Plus it's really nice not having to do RAM previews or renders. Just playback and it works!
Is Autodesk Combustion still around? That was another competitor of theirs back in the day.
I have been pretty happy with it, but I would be happy with Photoshop 7.
