Germany had the same with BTX, was there anything like this at all in the US (for the public, not for army/services/proto-Bloomberg)?

Probably not, or else some people would focus more on providing an internet-ready equivalent to this than trying to make "GopherSpace" a thing.

I believe AT&T was trying to build a "videotex" system based on the NAPLPS protocol which was developed by Telidon in Canada.
