I’d say that’s not so unique (although few other fields have proofs in the first place!) Proof techniques are tools, and proofs are evidence that the tools that are used, work. Similarly in, say, sciences where experimental physics is a whole field unto itself, and devising and running new experiments has intrinsic value besides the evidence they gather. At least for the experimentalists themselves, the theoreticians might not agree =)
