I hate designers who think they are typographers. Typography is an engineering discipline. It is not something you want to leave to designers. Especially not insecure designers (and customers) who need constant novelty.
No, they are not. Thinking they are does not make it so and it just leads to poor typesetting. The typographers I know typically have a BA from an engineering college. The advent of desktop publishing and later other forms of electronic publishing has hollowed out the field.
When web browsers support LaTeX-like hyphenation and justification with microtypography (tiny tweaks to the tracking tightness), then I will be obsolete and happy.
