From a marketing/business perspective for the automotive industry, my hypothesis is that it’s in their interest to favor publicizing the ‘best-case scenario’ earliest dates over realistic target dates for these kinds of milestones to hype the public up and make a company look like they are ahead of the pack in innovation.
This is the sentiment I gathered from also looking back at previous announcements in various industries (see r/retrofuturism on reddit) where a CEO will say that something is 5 years away when in practicality it’s at least 5 years away from being 5 years away.
