None of the desktops are any good at high DPI yet, and Gnome seems to have gone off the deep end in terms of killing useful features and settings (removing desktop and tray icons for example).

It’s absurd to remove these things, and have the community re-implement core desktop feature as Javascript plugins without even a stable API between major versions.

GNOME on Wayland is nice on my hidpi screens. Wayland even got mixed DPI working better that most of my co-workers windows or Mac machines.

It still doesn’t have fractional scaling like the Mac does (at least without Wayland). I have 28” 4K monitors, so I need to run them at about 1.25-1.5x.

To do that, I need to scale to 2x in the Gnome settings, then scale down using xrandr, and I have to manually position the X offset the second monitor.

OTOH, Wayland is able to run software written in the 80's without it realizing. That's quite an accomplishment.
