The world, other than the US, runs on WhatsApp. Business, support and payments are done there. So people do care.

If you're going to say "other than the US" then you've got to say at a minimum "other than the US and China", but really "other than the US and China and Japan and Korea and Taiwan and Thailand and Russia and most of Central Asia".

Only mentioning the US is wildly americentric even by HN standards.

In a world where OneDrive exists?

I've used OneDrive across 3 companies with no problems.

That lawsuit was about trade secrets shared with DMV. And DMV advised them to file a restraining order against a third party seeking redacted info.

It was actually about all kinds of information about the safety of their cars, how the company handles collisions, how they decide to make human drivers take over, details of injuries caused by their cars, etc.

The DMV required them to submit their safety data before allowing the vehicles on the road. Waymo claims that the data the DMV needed about the public safety of their cars, and the emails they exchanged about it with regulators, were entirely "trade secrets" to keep them hidden from the public who understandably felt like they should be able to access that information since those cars are going to be on their streets.

I've felt more uncomfortable with the UK Border Force than US CBP. It's been a few years since I've been to the UK, but there was usually more tension for Non-European foreigners at the Airport than non-Americans at the US airports.

Whatsapp is more popular in the US than you'd think. Probably due to a large immigrant population. I'm in several groups that use the channels feature to organize things like soccer, game nights etc. Most people with family abroad use Whatsapp, and that's a huge portion of the US.

I belong to two Toastmasters groups. One is majority non-immigrant American/caucasian, one is majority immigrant (from India, Pakistan, etc). The first one does club communication primarily via email. The second does club communication exclusively thru WhatsApp.

It's an interesting divide.

I do have some Caucasian friends who use WhatsApp. One stopped using it when FB purchased it, which I can respect. Most people I know in the states though just use iMessage or signal.

iMessage really isn't popular in Europe. Although the fact that any SMS sent between two iPhones automatically converts into an iMessage message means that there are definitely (accidental) users.

The DMA is enforced by bureaucracy. The commission proposes that certain platforms are big enough to be regulated, and then there's a comment period/negotiation. The list of platforms currently being regulated is publicly available.

There is a hard number of users you have to achieve, its one of the reasons why iOS had to allow third party app stores but playstation did not.

In fact, Apple is still part of the DMA list with Safari, iOS, iPad OS and App Store.

I might be misremembering, but I think iMessage implementing RCS was the compromise.

Unlikely, iOS still doesn't support RCS in most European countries.

iMessage isn't popular enough in Europe to be broken up by the DMA from what I recall.

(However, you can probably compare it to other lifestyle changes people on previous weightloss drugs did. If we presume that going on a weightloss drug at all is roughly the same impact on associated lifestyle change choices.)

A lot of christians will start a "Bible In One Year" program at the beginning of the year. Kind of like the gym resolution. Sometimes it will take a few years to read the whole Bible, and then you start the cycle again. There's lots of different plans out there.
