Dwarf fortress is the “reading a book” of vidya for sure.

But sometimes I personally forget that it’s allowed and enjoyable to just read 20 mins here and there…

> we can find other sources or just do with less

That kind of rhetoric is typically only employed when you’re in some great struggle, and the sacrifices made are supposed to be offset by a greater good.

In this trade war the struggle was completely avoidable and you chose it for yourself. Now you’re deploying the belt tightening home front rhetoric.

I’m going to be a little naughty and stop the constructive discourse to say: HOLY MOTHER OF COPE!

What is there to cope with? I’m not in favor of a trade war or anything, but if someone is going to claim we are desperate or make other claims that I believe to be sensationalist, wrong, or misleading I’ll just call them out. “Do this or else” always get an “else” from me, and I suspect the vast majority of Americans too.

By the way, this same logic applies to Canada. Why are they increasing prices of imported goods? There isn’t any great struggle going on here or greater good. And yes before you say “we are standing up to the US” we can say “we are standing up against trade practices we find unfair (regardless of their accuracy).

> cyberpunk is NOW a playable game

I never had problems with cyberpunk but I think I know why: I built a new PC right around its release and it was good enough to play it smoothly on 4K medium or HD ultra.

When I checked to see what 4K ultra looked like, the graphics latency caused a bunch of scripting to fall apart and the game glitched really bad.

IIRC the console release was notorious for bugs, so I assume consoles were not performant enough to run the game buttery smooth nor could they be easily upgraded.

I encountered bugs when it first released even with a decent PC. IIRC there was a mission where you were running away in a truck, and it would crash every time at a certain point so I could never complete it. Also the whole save file size limit debacle, where they never actually removed deleted items from your inventory and the save file would reach a certain size that the game could no longer read (10mb or something like that)

I've played through the whole thing on the day one patch. On PC it was really not that bad. On console was another story though

That is ... interesting. The game use wall clock waits or something instead of "game logic tic" wait?

Cyberpunk was a dumpster fire on release, I'm not joking, you could have two machines seemingly identical but get wildly different performance, it was an absolute mess.

Even to this day after so many patches some bugs still are present.

The PS4 release was notoriously bad because they were reliant on caching from disk, if it's an SSD it's ok, if it's a hard drive, though luck...

This is even worse when you look at all the marketing material leading up to release, if you put that together it's close to fraud in my opinion...

Ah yes, American Psycho was shot in Toronto wasn’t it?

It was! Downtown near the financial district.

One Linux kernel please, the 87320be9f0d24fce67631b7eef919f0b79c3e45c vintage

Finally, I can get Ubuntu on a CD.

Back in the day I ordered the free disks by the hundreds

Disks are magnetic. The optical kind are discs.

What? Disks are a 2D shape. Some computer discs are magnetic, many involve etchings, or apparent etchings perceived by a laser.

Excellent choice, the "Merge tag 'net-7.2-rc2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net".

Excellent choice, sir

Is this the one with a hash collision?

The death of Ivan Ilyich by Tolstoy is bleak, humane and fairly short. I enjoyed it like a good Charles Dickens

On the other hand, after reading Ovid's Metamorphoses, you realize that as far as narratives go there’s nothing new. It’s all been done to death, remixed and rehashed for millennia. The great Ovid probably lifted ideas and tropes from somewhere else.

Yet all those stories in all their forms still sell today, and still impress people.

Not worrying about unoriginality frees you to just enjoy yourself… and just maybe do something original.

>So one way to keep it from getting enshittified, again is to make the barrier to entry just a touch higher, or add friction.

We already had that, it was called crypto mining. Profit motive has taken care of that already

One of my hobbyist workflows involved transcribing ETF prospecti into yaml for an optimizer to optimize over.

Used to take me maybe 10-20 minutes per sheet.

Then I got codex to whip up a script that sends each sheet to a fairly low parameter locally running LLM and I have the yaml in a couple seconds.

My dream is to bootstrap myself to local productivity with providers… I know I’ll never get there because hedonic treadmill etc, but I do feel there’s lots more juice to squeeze. I just need to invest more time into AI engineering…

How long until LLMs are prompting LLMs to write a response to their user query?

Actually, this happens already in a modular way AFAIK…

This already happens with -- e.g. -- Claude Code spawnining parallel agents and then collating their results.
