Even assuming the end-state of all this is Trekonomics -- consider the amount of retired folks that generally just sit around and watch TV. I think a massive culture-shift is in order before we can even consider a healthy society consisting of 0 essential employment.

Agreed, that will take a few generations. We can start today and tell every kid that the work-all-day-cake is a lie.

Because C is the best.

Jeez. Surely the ECS agent could just query for permission to join a cluster, and disable if disallowed?

No, it can do whatever it wants. Just don't leak resources!

I would kill to see the equipment intel uses to study these things

I thought VTune would let you see into it to some extent.

Not to mention huge quant firms that paid more than 4x your salary just to get a trading latency advantage

If you understand finance and aren’t specifically attempting to arb on that timescale, you actually want to participate in markets with those participants, because their presence gives you less variance/better price discovery on the scales that don’t factor into your decisions to buy and sell things.

So basically if you’re larping as a trader you will consistently get your ass handed to you unless you are genuinely better than all the pros, but if you’re investing or optimizing for a specific risk profile/exposure/timeline you’re playing a different game.

Anyway the fact that it’s so hard to explain this stuff to individuals does strengthen the argument that most individuals are better off following the herd.

thats one of the areas where quants squeeze edge the other is more boring where they are essentially "market neutral" and they try to figure out how to make a few cents everyday knowing the downside is a global financial crisis.

their edge is basically political so that they get a bail out and thats what the quants will never see in their models.

not to get cynical further, just do what the GP says, buy index or figure out what the biggest movers are and buy those for more exposure

Pretty big gap in quality of life between people who have no worries about their next meal and those who have to stress over every one.

If you make $2000 and your rent is $1800 are you food insecure or rent insecure?

This is a miscategorization imo, food is incredibly cheap compared to any American income or welfare program.

My comment didn’t really portray what I’m getting at. Food insecurity is obviously an indicator for financial confidence. I know people can afford food, on top of the fact they will choose to pay for it because they have to. I know people who have chosen to eat and fall behind on rent. The point is, if you’re worried about your meals, you’re not living the rest of your life with confidence. It’s not something to be brushed aside.

I agree, it should not get brushed aside. Food insecurity is used as a mask for actual problems. It’s atrocious.

I think about this problem often in life because of my tendency to procrastinate. Only the long term effects that cause me serious paranoia get any real attention (failing to meet social expectations, major health issues, large-figure finance problems). It’s absolutely necessary to define the constraints before they define you. This requires a lot of forward thinking and effort but considering how little time we get on this earth… worth it

I don't love that this starts an API server on launch and has no option to disable it...

SSAO really is awful but it’s the best performing AO we could get for a long time afaik. It’s such a hallmark of 00s and 10s rendering that I laugh every time I see it in a modern release. There are some new solutions hitting the space, I believe RTGI/PT inherently handles AO, and there is even a new method called ‘FidelityFX CACAO’ which does look considerably more realistic. Things are improving… slowly.

AO is an approximation of how indirect light behaves. If you have an actual global illumination solution you don't need these tricks.

AO is derived from full GI with some extremely crude approximations. Anything that simulates full GI more accurately is implicitly a more physically accurate replacement of AO. Still, AO is not dead because it is still a rather simple and cheap cheat to add more visual definition to concave corners and highly shadowed areas. Sometimes, artists decide that their scene should have this extra touch.

yes, this is something I have seen used to good effect, for example in the RE:4 remake

Ehhh, I think most engineers that actually want this are pretty accepting of their current tooling and wouldn’t want to switch to a whole new Linux distribution just for a slightly more seamless experience. Besides, the people who care are always pushing forward to make the UX better — see devcontainers, Apple Containers, WSL, etc.
