Unlike an actual Bloom filter (which does not return false negatives), the cheaper model is still trusted to correctly recognize synonyms, equivalent functional constructions etc.

One is strictly a performance optimization, the other is a speed/quality tradeoff. It might well be a very good one, but it’s a tradeoff nevertheless. The framing is misleading.

That is the spread which the gold dealers have to make a profit. But bullion is bullion anywhere you turn and no matter to who you sell. No gold dealer will turn down investment grade gold.

Coordination cost maybe. If you're transferring A -> B and C <- D, but A and C or B and D don't know each other or even dislike each other, it's going to be hard to even get them to talk about the fungibility of the actual bars. And I bet airfare is the cheapest part after all the security and paychecks of people arranging the transaction.

It's not a great analogy, since Bloom filters are guaranteed to not have any false negatives, only false positives.

Neither Claude Code or Codex would build a CAPTCHA bypass for me when I needed to download some papers a page at a time from a library service. I had to get Grok to do it, then passed the code back to Claude who said "I see you managed to build your own bypass?"

Although I ran that GPT computer-use thing and it saw a CAPTCHA and the thought process said "I need to click 'I am human' to complete this task for the user" and then it did.


At least in one of these cases the models were being tested without the normal safeguards you would see as a regular user.

I spotted Claude doing it when accessing PubMed.

Both GPT-5.6 and Opus 4.8+ are able to solve them on the fly. I was surprised too first I saw it.
