Kind of a funny day to post this (WMATA just released data showing crime rates at a 25-year low)

Sounds like time to send in the National Guard.

25 year low is still an order of magnitude higher than a developed country.

I have do idea about DC but I don't trust crime rate stats - a lot might be unreported.

In NYC last year someone burnt someone else to death while they sat, relaxed and watched, and in a seperate incident a person died died and someone else had sex with them afterwards.

It could that be crime is lower or it could be that insane brutality has become normalized.

Crimes stats famously get massaged. However murders are hard to downgrade.

But do you have reason to believe that crime is reported less often now than in the past?

I have tried fairly persistently to make Apple Photos my primary photo management tool and I finally gave up recently. The app crashes repeatedly when I have it open—only occasionally until this year but the frequency has increased to the point that it no longer feels usable. A real shame. I’d rather stay in the ecosystem if I had the choice.

Wow the way this renders on mobile is dizzying

I thought / hoped it’s intentional

It's been my understanding since GPT-3 that tools that claim to identify LLM authorship of arbitrary text are basically unreliable.

This apparently is not true anymore: Pangram has a false positive rate below 0.5% and is robust to various adversarial techniques.

It offered a free demo, but it wanted me to subscribe first, so I declined.

Great tool. I recognize at least three names in my neighborhood who received money for a new single member LLC

I immediately noticed this as well. In many cases, they weren't even LLCs, just names.

Maybe my memory is hazy from that period, but I don't recall the clear call to action to request five-figure loans as an individual, (almost) all of which appear forgiven.

I looked for my family's businesses and other old friends and didn't find any of them. Texted my parents about this and they sound as surprised as me, and they have had a small local business for about a decade before Covid. My mom wasn't even aware that they would be eligible. And yet I see individuals, and others in my hometown whose businesses consist of only them and possibly one other person (likely part-time) made out with tens of thousands of dollars, all forgiven. Self-employed and sole proprietorships even. One family who I was always suspicious about how they always had whatever disposable money was needed for anything (the primary income was a local vending machine business) got $187k in this, according to this site. All forgiven.

I saw one address where it looked like every family member got a loan. Pretty crazy.

I found one address nearby that has a "Christian Ministries" listed at the top and 28 business and individual names below it, 1 loan each.

They use the difference between measured red and infrared light divided by the sum of measured red and infrared light https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalized_difference_vegetati...

I've read it and it states it is not an useful metric and, please correct me if I'm wrong, does not say anything about measuring fake plants. As far as I understood, it does use the reflectance in red and infra red to detect soil, water and vegetation, but it was not designed to detect fake green plastic from plants anyway.

I mean, who would think someone would use fake grass and fake plants and also use paint in mountains. It is so stupid that no one would even think in measuring it.

Plastic doesn't look like foliage under NIR.
