I don't have any innate talent. My journey began with taking a singing class back in university and then taking voice lessons and classes at the local community college four years later. It took about 3 years of consistent practice and training with a great voice teacher before I felt I developed an admirable instrument. My self-confidence definitely skyrocketed, and I consider it one of the best investments in myself, even if it's not something I pursue professionally. The external validation is great, but the sensation of singing is even better.

My girlfriend is an opera singer and voice teacher who's pivoting to primarily online lessons. She's working on establishing an online presence and is offering free consultations and promotional rates. If you're interested, email me at the address in my profile. She has substantial experience teaching people with technical backgrounds (such as me) and is fluent in communicating concepts accordingly. I'd suggest at least the consultation so she can guide you in the right direction, if anything!

Echoing the others, sounds like you're trying to starting a consulting agency (the difference being a startup focuses on solving a specific problem).

Either way, incorporation can be done using services such as Stripe Atlas.

I believe you reference the wrong "4000 weeks". That one is by a different author. There doesn't appear to be a Goodreads listing for this one yet, but there is on Amazon.

I've been using Collective (formerly Hyke) [https://www.collective.com/] which not only provides you your own Quickbooks account (to handle all invoicing) but also helps you set up your own S-Corp for better tax savings (if you're US-based) and navigate all the accounting duties. It's a monthly subscription service, but the time saved from not having to deal with accounting plus the tax savings from be set up as an S-Corp pays for itself. Just speaking as a happy customer for the past 18 months. They are extremely supportive and responsive; it's like having your own accounting team. In terms of invoicing, like everyone and you have mentioned, it does depend on the client. I usually invoice at the end of the month.

Feel free to message me for more guidance on getting situated as a freelancer and if you want to learn more about my experience with Collective. I was in your position and someone had explained all this to me instead of learning about it the hard way!

Yes, based on that sentence alone, it would be ambiguous. But the author expanded on this with a whole section clarifying what he meant, which is about the rate of feature development and adoption. Not sure if you missed it, but it starts with "I think the Web platform’s most frustrating aspect is also its greatest asset: it’s slow. It’s not just slow, it’s “it took 10 years1 to ship the <main> element which is just a spicy <div>” kind of slow. It’s glacial."

If the author wants to conflate speed of the web with speed of innovation, that’s on them.

I saved a very rough draft of my application but now, when I return to startupschool.org, it shows me the "Thank you for applying to Startup School!" message. Should I be worried? Or can I still edit my application via "Settings"?

You should be able to edit your profile and company details when you log in.
