This statement is not complete, almost all new Ubiquiti PoE equipment is 802.3af compatible (48V). Older hardware is 24V only. To cross this gap they released several switches (and routers) with PoE ports which can do both (passive 24V or auto sensing 48V).

Yes, the pros and edu unifi's are 802 but the lite and LR are not. The prosumer edgerouters are mostly 24v as well. (what reading I've done says to stay away from the ER lite POE and get the X SFP instead but that's only 24v)
Anyways, not a big deal, just pointing it out as I was bitten by this. Nothing a $50 switch didn't solve.

This is a frighteningly effective hack, which once again underscores that if your attacker has physical access to the machine, you're hosed. I've seen this attack demonstrated live on Windows Server. It just uses DMA to search the memory and skip the subroutine that checks whether the password entered was valid.
Just put glue in the firewire connector, you say? Well, for instance most laptops that can be docked are firewire-accessible through the docking port. The firewire interface is also reachable through a USB adapter. So you'd have to glue the USB ports shut as well. (Impractical). Even if you do all this, most motherboards have the FireWire interface enabled on a PCI level, even if there are no physical PCI ports on the computer. So against this attack you'd be pretty much hosed regardless, unless you use a chipset that explicitly doesn't implement FireWire.
To prevent this attack, disable auto-loading of FireWire drivers within the OS. I believe one of the Linux driver stacks already does this & OS X protects itself when the machine is locked.
Also, FireWire over USB is repeatedly mentioned as not working.
This is a collection of quick shell recipes, so in that context it's perfectly acceptable. Besides, there are some environments where you can't just install packages willy-nilly, even if they're present on the repositories.
Maybe I'm missing the point but why is this an achievement? I've seen Google images do this for years (from the backend, sends the users viewport dimensions and then automatically calculates the optimum filling). For years (Warning NSFW!) vusker.com has been doing this client-side in their thumbnail and gallery view. Plus look at the vertically stacked posts from Pinterest.
It seems more a marketing ploy to get attention to the great service chromatic.io is providing?
I think it's good to qualify your opinion with your level of expertise. There's no rule that says HN should only be for discussion by experts (hopefully there never will be), and if you don't know something for sure it's best to say so that others don't take your word as gospel. That said, I'm no expert ;).
