That Wikipedia article needs a better screenshot. Otherwise, very interesting. And DESQview/X was X Window System on DOS with pre-emptive multitasking, wow.

For me the memoir class made LaTeX worse. The titlesec package is more customizable, easier to use, and reduced the size of the preamble significantly.

That's if you need to customize headings. I usually can keep using the standard ones, so that's not my case, and I suspect this also applies to a lot of people.

Customizing chapter styles, page styles, and headings was my sole reason for using the memoir class. I'm probably in the minority, that's true.

Indeed those are pretty great, but none of those grow _on_ you.

No, but there is the mycobiome.

Iran isn't just central Tehran. Look up the Zagros Mountains and the Alborz Mountains. Or just look at a picture of the northern Tehran skyline, it is at the foot of the Alborz, a huge mountain range. There's plenty of woodlands and forest too. Some parts of the Hyrcanian forests get over 50 inches of annual rainfall, which isn't Forks, WA, but it is substantial.

You're reinforcing parents point by highlighting the variety: at most, just 1 of the areas is a close match to the terrain at the training grounds.

Not really, if you're entering Iranian airspace from the Mediterranean, the Persian Gulf, or Europe, you're flying over either the Zagros Mountains or the Alborz Mountains. Unless you crash/eject in a city, you're almost certainly going to be in the mountains. Look at a map.

Percival Lowell misunderstanding the Italian word “canali”[1] should rank pretty high in terms of similar phenomena and is probably the most impactful example.

It looks like Wikipedia [1] has a better explanation of the actual misunderstanding, the page you linked wasn't very clear to me (Italian "canali" corresponds to English "channel", not English "canal").

From the Microsoft LTSC info:

> If you fail to activate this evaluation after installation, or if your evaluation period expires, the desktop background will turn black, you will see a persistent desktop notification indicating that the system is not genuine, and the PC will shut down every hour.

I was ready to grab a ISO, but this sounds pretty user hostile to me.

Just activate?

Are you serious?

Looks cool, but produce GIFs? Asciinema is text based IIRC.

The name is the downside of Asciinema IMO. Can’t help but read it as ASCII enema, which is funny, but not what I want think about. Just call it tty-player or something…

Did someone say titty player?

Touché.

vhs can also create video files: https://github.com/charmbracelet/vhs#output

But the brilliant thing about Asciinema is that the output is just text (JavaScript). You can pause it and copy text from it if you need to, and the filesize is basically nil.

Basically, writing a CS paper in LaTeX using the "alg*" packages (algorithm2e, algorithmicx, algorithms, algpseudocode, algxpar, algpseudocodex, etc.) is living in the ALGO 60 / ALGO 68 world. For the most part, nobody uses anything from the standards that would require superfluous explanations in a paper.

Yet the Jurassic Park franchise is just as strong as ever.

Fun fact, in the novel the computers were Cray X-MPs (sadly Cray is now semi-defunct, since they were bought and merged into HPE) [1].

[1] https://cray-history.net/2023/08/20/cray-systems-in-popular-...

Thinking Machines was chosen over the Cray because they had more visual appeal. Sheryl Handler the CEO had (has) a real flair for and it showed; they were neat looking machines

The Cray machines looked more like an airport seating area. Or with later models, obstacles in a laser tag arena. While the Thinking Machines with the moving LEDs looked alive, almost like it was designed to be a character in a movie, which they became.

Maybe the new company should consider something like this for the next investor show and tell

what? Cray machines were pretty rad looking in their own way.

They were, but they didn't blink.
