OP put in 60 amp service. I can't imagine why you would need that much, even with the minisplit. My flat is three times the size of his office and has an electric water heater and washing machine and it has 32 amp service.

In 2000 you could go to the library and look up the number in the Polk directory. There was one for each borough. There was an alphabetical section, a section by street address, and a section by phone number. You can still go down to the library and use them, for example if you want to know what was at 867 Madison Ave in 1926, or who had the phone number PENnsylvania 5000.


Also about 16 GW. They don't say what the installed capacity is but average midday generation is 40 GW for usage of 40% which is not bad.

It uses R-22 so it's pretty old, but probably not 1950s. Maybe 1970s. R-22 was phased out starting in the 1980s, and banned in 2010 (that's in Europe, maybe later in US).

When I lived in the US I tried to get a minisplit and they wanted $4000 for a medium size unit! The same one where I live now is $400 installed.

As far as I can tell, the import of the R-22 refrigerant itself wasn't banned until 2020.

Serious and maybe stupid question, also note I don't live in the US. Is this really needed? If you put a scoring pad and a couple pencils in each lane would your customers say "what is this shit", turn around and walk out?


Oh yeah. We even have one lane pair the auto-scoring isn't working, we just can't assign most people to either lane. The machines themselves work fine, and we do have a way to bypass the failed unit - but for the generations that have never seen paper scoring, you'd think had asked them to file their taxes for fun.


Growing up, never saw automatic scoring. Keeping score on paper was just part of going bowling. They had an overhead projector at each lane so everyone could see the score sheet.

In high school, I was invited every time even tangential friends wanted to go bowling because I was the only person who knew how to keep score on paper (the nearby lanes didn’t have electronic scoring). And that was over 30 years ago.


This! I took “rec games” as one of my PE classes in high school. This involved bowling, among other things. A highlight of this was the time I bowled a 24…

However, as the class nerd, I knew how to score a game. My parents used to take us as kids. And fortunately, that was on the test. :-)


Not that it necessarily justifies the difficulty in making it work (which I just learned about, thanks OP!), but I absolutely adore the silly animations that play after you bowl. It's seriously make or break for me. I can live without beer and snacks, but it just isn't the same without the goofy animations.

I don't know about in swimming centers in England but I do know YMCAs in the US often have budgets that look like:

- Revenue: $25.01M

- Expenses: $25M

So "small savings" like this can add up for them.


This is mostly just due to how nonprofits work. If you have excess revenue, you can’t return it to shareholders so you might as well spend it on mission-oriented activities.


Non-profits have treasury functions.. it is prudent that many of them have some sort of cash reserves.


You can, and should, keep it in case you have less revenue next year though.


You can do this up to a point but if it looks like you're actually making a profit it might raise questions eventually. Keeping enough to cover one year's operating costs is pretty common though.

Non-profits usually don't "compete" at least in the economic sense. They exist for a charitable purpose that isn't normally well-served by the competitive market.


First of all, charity is a christian concept that has no role in modern secular society. Anything worth doing out of the kindness of our hearts is worth doing collectively without expecting individuals do disproportionately sacrifice.

Second, of course zero-margin processes have an economic role. That is what market efficiency looks like. The entire point of competition is to produce these economic processes. The american brain can't fathom getting their money's worth lol

Keeping in mind that the datacenter operator is also paying the power bill for that (which presumably is roughly 28 kW), amounting to something like £65,000/year at current UK rates

It's obviously not 180 kWp/m. If it was I could put 1 meter of panels on my roof and power my house and 200 of my neighbors.

I didn't try to calculate the amount of energy it produces in a year, just the length of panels required to power a high speed train when the sun is shining. 18,000 watts / 100 meters is 180 watts per meter. At 180 watts per meter, 50 km gives you 9 MW, which is about what a high speed train consumes at cruise.

This is incorrect. 18000 Wp/100m = 180 Wp/m or 180 kWp/km. So parent is correct, and you can either add or drop a "k".

That is peak power, obtainable in summer months & muuch less in winter.

Over the whole year: 16000 kWh/100m = 160 kWh/m = 160 MWh (160,000 kWh) per km.

High-Speed train after acceleration uses about 30 kWh/km

8GWh / 30kWh = 270000km

A typical high speed train in Europe drives between 300 000 and 450 000 km/year

The 50 km solar wouldn't be enough.

A passenger train using 6 kWh/km could drive 1 350 000 km using 50 km of solar.(27000 km/km)

There is about 10 000 km of high speed rail in the EU and about 200 000 km of rail in total. All combined trains travel some 4.1 billion km per year.

4 100 000 000 km / 27 000 km = 151 851 km

It fits but very slowly.

We should order the 72 888 480 panels. If they cost 50 euro each it would only cost 3.6 billion.

Took them 3 years to install 48 so 72 million would take 4.5 million years.

Maybe the Chinese can help.
