They get emotional (usually angry) when you tell them you disable javascript- as if every site that serves any kind of content has an automatic entitlement to run arbitrary code on your computer.
I slightly agree, but it seems like I have to install a restart-required update for my Macs at least every two weeks nowadays. Which not only requires that full reboot sequence, but also 10 minutes of downtime waiting for what I assume is a bunch of encryption work. So I would counter that I would like to see that optimized better. (Of course, I would like it even better if we could just branch to the alternate timeline where Apple wasn’t encrypting and signing the system volume to avoid any chance of us modifying it)

Hard agree. Frustrating that I’ve still never had a non-Mac yet that I can just shut the lid and know that it won’t be blowing fans, apparently running, in my freaking backpack. Or wake up randomly in the middle of the night disturbing my sleep.
Nor can I be confident that when I open it, I’ll see the login screen already ready to go. How is this so hard? I would understand with Linux or with a home-built PC. But shouldn’t Lenovo and HP be able to make sleep work correctly?
Yep. Reliability > Speed. Whenever people complain systemd boots slow, it's because it's following the dependency graph set by the distro which focusses reliability over speed.
I've had some experiences like that, mostly when Spectre/Meltdown were new. (or if I had a dGPU which didn't have good drivers - or.. if there's no hardware acceleration for smooth scroll for some other reason, like chrome on ARM for a long time).
I agree that it's a dealbreaker, and the circumstances in which it can happen are opaque and difficult to troubleshoot.
Luckily these days with anything released since 2020- it's a lot better. Linux still struggles a lot with JS runtimes on Skylake.
While I am throwing Linux under the bus a bit here, I am still perplexed that we use an exceptionally inefficient language as the major application delivery system of the modern day. We complain that it uses a lot of RAM and is slow, but if you consider what javascript is compared to how CPUs think about things, it's a miracle we get what we get... we managed to get a marvel of engineering and the response has been to shove millions of lines of code through it... At some point, yeah, it's slow.
I'm becoming really upset at people whom I otherwise align with for taking absolute statements that don't make sense.
DHH said some stuff you disagree with, incidentally while I have always identified with strong social systems, welfare, high taxes and things like free healthcare, I can't say I disagree with the core of what he tried to say, because there has been seizemic ethnic change within a single generation - and people not talking about it is actually fuelling the extreme position.
So when you say "has a right to exist", what do you mean exactly? Because if I was to stand in the lobby of a parliamentary building and was forcibly removed, would that mean I don't have the right to exist?

Saying "Hey, this demographic and major cultural change in the last 20 years makes the environment different" is considered racism- which has the obvious consenquence of making the word "racist" have less power.. It's not racism to notice this, it's racist to think anyone else is lesser than natives or to group "them" and treat an ethnic group as a homogenous bloc.
I'm reminded of the phrase "if you don't respect me, I won't respect you" whereby respect can mean as an authority or as a person, and they mean "if you don't respect me as an authority, then I won't respect you as a person".
You're saying "if you don't let me do everything I want then you're denying that I have the right to exist at all" which is a type of hysteric language which permits any atrocity in response it can be framed as an act of self defence.

There hasn't. Look at actual numbers, and what you see is the same hysteria that was directed against the Jews during the first half of the XXth century: foreign agents, traitors, parasites, nuisance... All for a tiny fraction of the population. All blown up by the same people who are the ones responsible for the misery of the majority of the population - yes, the "whites" are being screwed up by other "whites", not by the "brown" people.

One: it was English people in Zimbabwe too, and two: they have the right to live there; the problem with them is that they took everything by force and decided the native people where subhuman. Pretending the situation is the same with brown-skinned low-wage immigrants coming in western countries is completely cuckoo crazy.

This is why I don't like getting into online debates... most people seem wholly uninterested in the (seemingly to them) blasphemy that is "other perspectives that aren't mine." To me, continually stroking your confirmation bias just proves you're not really as smart as you think you are. And indeed I think the Dunning-Kruger effect still applies to "smart" people.
You don't stop when you are estimating your ability correctly; as you learn more, you gain more awareness of your ignorance and continue being conservative with your self-estimates.
What this behavior has led me to do is basically only challenge people who are actually asking a question, because then there's a chance they might be willing to entertain other perspectives than their own. But if I say something and get a matter-of-fact response by someone with an obvious god complex... it's like they're not interested in mutual understanding, they just want to "win" the argument by asserting things loud enough until they're believed.
But when I see people being straight up dogmatic and preaching walls of black-and-white opinions as if they're somehow infallible and that there can't be any other perspectives... I just see incompetence. But it is frustrating because you want to set the record straight, because you know others are going to believe the louder person... but there's really nothing you can do about it. One time someone tried to argue with me that "cloud storage does not exist." All I could do in that moment was just ignore them and move on.

I wrote it internally after struggling a lot with getting the relevant knowledge from the relevant authorities (Klabnik has the best resources but his writing seems to depend on you understanding abstract concepts before you grasp the practicality, which works for programming languages but less so for tools - which you want to "get out of the way").
It's a highly paid, in demand career path where formal education is optional.
They came for the sysadmins first because they had more power, but they were always coming for you.
Even if "Agentic Coding" doesn't solve programming, there is an aligned incentive not to care, I've heard directly from the executives at large companies that they despise the amount of leverage software programmers have... and now they have an excuse to end it on a unified front.
That is sufficed to say that many people in our profession don't actually care about software development or programming, they just saw a lucrative career path.
My personal and somewhat bitter opinion is that the profession will be more enjoyable for me once all the people who are only in it for money leave. I can live a blue collar salary life working in tech and still enjoy it. Maybe I'll have less scrum masters and shit. Thank god.
If I thought this would happen I would've done something else with my life. There's still some fun to be had, and I'll probably stay in the industry because it pays well and I have history here, but the magic has largely died.
I essentially have the opposite opinion, you're going to lose people who had a lot of passion and be left with people who are content writing prompts for money.
My personal take is that the AI era will be a rough brush that will help shed all the accumulated cruft in this profession.
I think highly technical, knowledgable people will remain, and thrive in a few years, and all the rest will move on to the next fad, or whatever pays the most.
The reason a segment of the current market will remain is because LLMs still need steering, we are not at a point where an abstract idea can go from Tweet to product, and we are many many leagues away from that. Of course, this has been noted to oblivion before, so I'm not really providing shocker value at all here.
