Awful choice for whom exactly? From their point of view, it is the rational choice.

Awful choice for themselves and their futures. They may think they are making a rational choice but they’re not thinking about the future. Just like teenagers have always done.

Not that any of it is gender specific. The women on /r/myboyfriendisai are making the exact same mistakes, in many ways it’s worse because many are fully grown adults.

Maybe we just aren't far enough in the vibe coding side of things and there are still too many people in the industry who still pay attention to details, so no major catastrophes haven't happened yet because of vibe coding. So the people who pay attention to details are still carrying their organizations, but I do wonder how long it is going to be sustainable.

When it comes to joy killers because of AI, then it is dismal how plagiarism (going by the definition of "presenting someone else's work without attribution") suddenly became widely accepted. When I see long lists of bullet points with interspersed bold text, I know that it is something the sender did not write or bother reviewing. Absolute cherry on top when in the end of that text you see the typical LLM suggestion that you can ask for more information, which the sender didn't even bother removing.

> major catastrophes haven't happened yet because of vibe coding

Didn't Azure, AWS and Cloudflare crash a few times in the second half of 2025 because of vibe coding?

They crashed yes, but not for too long and they did recover. And was it ever confirmed it was because of vibe coding? Not sure how much if any it even impacted their stock.

It was confirmed each was because of vibe coding.

Can you share some links?

Asking for myself, some friends and HN community at large.

Catastrophies would be we vibe coded a nuclear plant or space rocket system and we blew up thousands of people due to a vibe coding error.

I can confirm that nuclear power plant software has much higher quality level than normal commercial software and extremly extensive testing. In addition, lot of nuclear safety is checked below the software level on hardware level.

Developement of nuclear power plant software is very conservative, it will use LLMs maybe in 10-15 years.

Bringing most of the western world economy to a standstill isn't one? When I say AWS was down I mean AWS was down.

> Bringing most of the western world economy to a standstill

That’s a huge exaggeration.

True, it was Crowdstrike that did that, and that one wasn't AI.

The Crowdstrike outage only affected Windows machines. It probably improved the world economy.

programmers were always against "software patents" - the idea of copyrighting algorithms and implementations

implementations are already copyright

Oh, the people who work on secure boot, attestation, DRM, and other such features know very well, but don't care. This is because the claimed benefits for them, such as less hackers, less malware, less bot traffic, outweigh any possible downsides for the society.

I think it's even worse than that. Our industry has a strong track record of only looking at potential upsides (and pretending they're certain) and not even seeing that there may be serious downsides.

It's a kind of blindness. The kind that is, in my opinion, is one of the major reasons why we ended up building a world that's more than a bit dystopian.

There is definitely a common type of computer security enthusiast for whom the need for security is absolute and costs don't even enter the equation.

Ironically, Signal folks have shown those leanings a lot when they forbade people from backing up their messages.

The difference is who controls it. If you want to set up secure boot with your own keys, good on you, go for it.

That's exactly the shortsighted view I'm talking about - you are ignoring the cost of building/adopting a system that you may not control in the future.

Yes. It's not a hard concept?

That is, respectfully, insane advice.

Say what? Technology has been awesome, it pretty much eliminates the risk in social interactions. With Internet, you are not forced to be part of a community you have no interest in and who do not like you anyway because of your interests, but you can choose and pick your own community. And the same goes for dating apps, they help completely derisk the initial approach and as pointed out elsewhere in this thread, risk of being seen as a creep.

The phrasing in your sources is absolutely horrible and brings back high school vibes of "lonely kids are bad because they are lonely, so they must be bullied to make them normal again". Just great.

> lots of them stay adolescent well into their 30s and require a caregiver or a substitute mom more than a gf/wife

What do you actually mean by this part?

They need someone to cook their meals, clean their bedroom, &c. while they spend their whole day on low life activities, they want to be 16 forever and live like when they had a mom to take care of the "annoying" things.

I know people my age (30+) who spend 8 hours a day gaming and the rest of their free time collecting pokemon cards, funkopops, scifi books they never read and have the audacity to complain about women not being """traditional""" anymore. They're basically out of shape teenagers with money, and they don't understand why it's not attractive. Some of them actually do live with their parents.

In EU, have not seen PA32QCV ever in stock anywhere.

B&H has same-day pickup in New York.

Amazing, checked just now and seems that these are now in stock in many places. When I checked last week, they weren't, seems like some stock got released for EU then.

New York isn’t in the EU…

If those people got a haircut, brushed their teeth and took a shower, they would be attractive!

> For example, studies have shown that men who decide to isolate themselves to be "family men" die earlier at age 58.

Yes, but isn't it a benefit to society as a whole though? All the prime working years are gone by then and there is no need to pay pension to those men or for expensive medical treatments. And younger generations can be happy for there being one less cishet white male boomer in the world.

I mean, it sure sucks for the individual not being able to enjoy their retirement, but for the society it seems that it will be a benefit.

People dying at below the average life expectancy is not a benefit to society.

This idea that people you don't like should die for the "benefit" of society has been tried before. It doesn't end well.

Of course people dying younger is a benefit to society. Old people cost a lot, they're not productive, and (unlike children) they don't have any productive years in their future either. Ideally we would all drop dead of a heart attack 10 years after reaching retirement age (this would also solve the geriatocracy we find ourselves in).

Instead we clutch to life far beyond any societal benefit and, in many cases, beyond personal benefit too, spending a fortune to delay death another few weeks or months… but with incredibly low quality of life.

That said, dying at 58 is probably of no real benefit. But everyone dying a few years younger would have prevented Brexit.

I notice that both you and bragh have this idea - bragh calls it "working years", and you call it "productive years". You only value the lives of people so long as the wealthy are able to extract value from them.

I'm all for death with dignity and not being a burden on your loved ones. But people who've worked all their lives deserve to have a period after where they can enjoy life without the burden of "productivity".

You misunderstand me. No, I do not think that it is a good thing that society works this way, but yet it does.

Eventually it doesn't end well indeed. But modern society has made it pretty clear that older men aren't actually needed and are more of a burden. Just look at how triggered the GP of the thread got just about a mention that men might want a different approach when it comes to social stuff.

Well, not needed, unless an actual shooting war breaks out and you need a lot more people pulling guard duty or just some very high-risk stuff younger men should not be wasted on. Like that Ukrainian unit of pensioner men in a ground-attack missile unit who source their own missiles by repairing unexploded ones.

> modern society has made it pretty clear that older men aren't actually needed and are more of a burden

The mistake - which leads to disaster - is more fundamental. Modern society isn't an actual thing with needs, just an abstract concept. Individual people are real, and we all have real rights and needs. 'Goverments exist to protect rights' - society exists to serve the individual, not vice versa. Almost all morality includes protecting and helping the vulnerable.

Who decides who is a burden? Infants and children are also a 'burden' as are people with all sorts of illnesses (and people spreading disinformation). Only the cruelest fascists have suggested they should die to help society, as if that's a reasonable discussion.

> Just look at how triggered the GP

Ad hominem is against HN guidelines. Just stick to the issues instead of trying to change the subject by attacking and characterizing people who don't agree with you.
