No, it's very lackluster in terms of salary unless you're working for a super company like Xero.

NZer here.

NZ isn't a great case for a likeness in pay to nearly anywhere else in the world for tech roles. Snr dev for a company specializing in Laravel/Shopify apps. <60k/year NZD

The education system itself is pretty broken, but not for the Early Childhood scene. Wife is doing her degree at the moment, and there is a great honor of a child's family's culture -- Embedding it into the child's learning. Te Whāriki has just undergone a massive update, mind you: http://www.education.govt.nz/early-childhood/teaching-and-le...

In terms of Primary schooling, I've had 2 friends who have decided that the reports they are needing to do on such a deep level and regular basis are to the point of holding back what they can teach and left the teaching industry altogether.

A few people in larger buildings are indeed having an issue with connecting to the base point.

This access point 'network' uses each other to make a mesh network, increasing the chance that the nearest access point has a connection to the base access point, which has a connection to the internet.

Ah, I remember Fab. I liked it a lot for browsing and such. But I can't recall ever purchasing anything off it.

Plugin functionality can be coded into the theme itself. Unless it isn't 'custom' that is. Then there is a plugins folder.

Themes should only be used as templates. Functionality for the most part belongs in plugins.

Thats a pretty bold statement. Kind of curious the reasoning

I guess I view this separation as an adaption of The Single Responsibility Principle. This is how I view themes & plugins, and their relationship. Your theme is used to display your site, it's navigation, content, it controls the markup browsers see.

Plugins are for adding functionality to your site, if you want a sitemap, there's a plugin for that. Not happy with your current sitemap? Install/Create a new plugin, replacing the old one. If your sitemap isn't working, where do you look? Your sitemap plugin's code.

The importance of having this separation of tasks, removes a lot of risks too in my opinion. If your site isn't working instead of risking having to change your theme, you can deactivate the troublesome plugin. Albeit finding the offending may be difficult, but at least you're not changing the total design of your site.

Hence why I believe in plugins and themes having distinct tasks. It really helped me organise the development, and maintenance of sites.

Here's a pretty decent setup for using git with WordPress too. https://github.com/markjaquith/WordPress-Skeleton

This is why I love HN. Such an in-depth smart response. Really making me rethink how I build on WP. Thank you

First time I've contributed something of value on here. Thanks!

Seems as though he's aware of such a thing.

"No, that's bundled adware. If I wanted to give you malware, I would have added a keylogger which you wouldn't have ever discovered (ask around; it's technically possible). So stop whining already, uninstall the extension and move on with your life!" http://productforums.google.com/d/msg/chrome/mlAD1ygc0v0/FL6...

(Also, he's now posting on the linked thread. 7 minutes ago last reply.)

> I would have added a keylogger

seems to imply that he was not logging keystrokes, which conflicts directly with the first post in that thread:

> they are tracking all data and keystrokes. checked with wireshark.

It'd be nice to have a copy so that we can find out for ourselves.

TIL you can append subreddits to get a multi-subreddit.

Website developer, 16NZD/hour

Woah, dude, you need to push that if you're a contractor. I'm ding a longer term role at the moment an charging $45 but only because they're happy for me to work 3 days and be left alone for the rest while I work on my startup. 16 is crazy! What skill set do you have? You are certainly worth more than that, even in NZ.

I was in your shoes a few years ago (in Auckland). Great experience if you're still learning, but get out of there as soon as you can. Auckland is terrible unless you're working remotely. There are much better opportunities down in Wellington or Christchurch.

Wow, I would have to say that seems completely unreasonable, even if you were in the smallest of towns in NZ. I don't know of anyone (inc. students) who charge less than $40/hour for development freelancing.
