https://blitzmax.org is always going to be my preferred BASIC.

Probably because they're not corrupt America. They don't walk around checking their back every minute for "Uncle Freedom" screwing them over.

It isn’t about corruption, when your data is now shared freely with other “partners”.

> Norway, Sweden, and Israel partner to test CBDCs (https://reclaimthenet.org/norway-sweden-and-israel-partner-t...)

Debanking someone is basically ending their lives in modern days, when your ID is linked to the banks, an ID that’s also to be used for digital services, you could get debanked for criticizing a politician in the future, for example.

And uncle freedom sure will get that data from their “closest ally”, not to mention any breaches like what happened in Sweden recently, a country that also wants to strap tracking on 13yo.

Digital ID is a nightmare anywhere’s used, it will turn any government into a totalitarian state.

How is this different from any other form of identification? If you are stripped of that you still wouldn't be able to access these services.

The difference is the link between your digital footprint and real life one. Without a digital ID, there’s a huge margin of using many digital services while maintaining a privacy, even more, anonymity too. With a digital ID, there’s a connected link between the two, further expanding the surveillance capabilities, coupled with AI to profile user’s sentiment and emotions (in Canada, they admit that will be one of the use cases https://www.canada.ca/en/government/system/digital-governmen...), you will end up in some monitored list for just stating some online opinions, if not even getting a visit, or more.

There are even tools are being sold to do that, an israeli company called logivote made a tool to scan the social media and check who bad mouthed the politicians. So expect in the near future, you bad mouth one, you get sent to jail the next day, or debanked.

Jeez Israel is going at full speed... recently when attempting to create an account at one of the brokers based in EU I was redirected to do a "friendly 3D full face scan" with another Israeli company - Au10tix. I noped out of the website instantly.

Looking further their parent company is doing "aviation security services", oh how convenient!

I never heard of an ID card being revoked. Reasons for refusing to renew it are also very few in my country - like not having a place to live (owned or rented).

So homeless might be refused ID? They're no longer a person?

What otherwise will you do with people priced out of the real estate market and unable to compile valid elaborate application documents to rent something? /s

Soylent Green?

I absolutely agree. I just don't like this American superiority on HN.

You're the one mentioning America.

You mean `exec claude "$@"`

1.0 and Zed still won't appear until I touch my mouse or press a key after it's been started...

Every KDE app I try (and the Plasma desktop) seems so good on paper, and they promise me the world! Then, wen I actually try them out, they always end up crashing or doing something weird. Like I cannot stand GIMP, so I've tried using Krita, but I don't think I've ever managed to finish something in it before it crashes. It's the same with Kdenlive.

Damn shame.

That's pretty weird; both Gimp and Krita (very different tools) were rock-solid to me. Speaking of KDEnlive, I experienced a few anomalies and crashes using the version from my distro; I switched to an AppImage version, and with it, everything Just Works™.

I suspect your crashes may also be related to dependencies, not some deficiencies of the application itself. Try a different build / AppImage / Flatpak, and see if you encounter the same problems.

I don’t use any KDE apps, but the Plasma desktop has been absolutely rock solid and super performant for me.

I do think that the idea that each toolkit has its own native app for each thing you might want to do with a computer is a recipe for a forest of half-maintained nearly-good apps. A lot of the KDE and GNOME app suites feel like checking boxes.

The entire KDE ecosystem is basically stuck on c++ I imagine the number of people volunteering to work on it in their free time isn’t exactly skyrocketing.

This happens to me when I brush off my mousepad too fast with my palm. It will also cause my wireless headset to "reboot".

I use wired headphones, and I'll get an electric discharge from my inner ear and through my earbuds when I get up from my chair.

It's not painful, but feels like pop rocks in my ear canal.

Heh. American funny

What would the in between be?

Use it for a month or two and decide it's not for you.

That is in between "use it for very short period of time" and "use it forever"

Gobolinux comes to mind.

If you don't mind a very limited set of software, the way tinycorelinux is setup can also allow multiple different tcz installed

These two Linux distros essentially allow two different versions of same software/libraries (glibc/python whatever) installed

(Gobolinux explicitly states that whereas I find it to be an unintended but elegant consequence for tinycorelinux but I recommend taking a look at Gobolinux)

Using a regular mutable system and Nix on top using Home Manager for example.

Using it for a year or so and then try another OS is my guess

I recommend changing the key to Super. As holding down Alt and clicking/dragging is often used by many applications and simply won't work then.

I just learned that you can use Super + Left Mouse to drag windows around and Super + Right Mouse to resize, due to this discussion. I have been using XFCE forever, mostly using hotkeys for tilling, and just did not know :D

Thanks !

Huh, I'm over 10 years in and didn't know about the rightclick-resize either. I really like it! Thanks!

Yes, it is best to use Meta/Windows key for system related actions (copy/paste, screenshot, application start, various windowing actions), and let Ctrl and Alt be used by the applications.

That is not XFCE itself, that is up to your theme. I'm on the Dracula theme and have about 16 pixels.

Are there any themes that allow changing window border size, title bar size, scrollbar width etc, like win 9x?

My scrollbar changes in Debian:

1. as root, edit /etc/environment and add: GTK_OVERLAY_SCROLLING=0

2. in ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css add: .scrollbar.vertical slider, scrollbar.vertical slider {min-width: 10px;}
